I apologize for not having an update in the past week, but I have been traveling up the East Coast on my third of four major trips during my retirement. Last week I drove up to University of Virginia to see my friend Vikas before driving up to NOVA (Northern Virginia, for those of you who aren’t down with the lingo) to do some expedited apartment shopping with my Dad before I head off to University of North Carolina at the end of the week. Since I don’t have much to say, nor do I have any of my breathtaking photography handy, I will keep this post short and use bullet points…
- Starting Now
- The drive up to UVA from Atlanta sucked. I took I-85 up through North Carolina, as is my normal drive, but then I got on to Highway 29 for the trip though Virginia. I’ve never been on 29 before, outside of Lee Hwy in NOVA, which I learned after the fact is the same road. That shouldn’t have surprised me. Highway 29 is apparently the road that takes you through every single hillbilly town in Virginia, while making your drive basically as slow as reasonably possible, given the fact that it is a highway. No kidding, I drove that road for 150 miles, going through such towns as Martinsville, Dansville, Reidsville, Scottsville (and no, this is not a joke, these are the towns I drove through) and Lynchburg, home of Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University. Every city had a 35 mph speed limit and a number of stoplights. That drive sucked and I will not be doing it again.
- UVA has a very nice campus, possibly the nicest college campus I have ever visited. I hadn’t been to the school since I was in 5th grade and went to Pete Gillan Basketball Camp, so my memories of the place were few. Despite getting to meet either Tiki or Ronde Barber at the camp (I don’t remember which one, it was when they were in college), I had more fun this visit.
- Apartment shopping in DC sucks. Everything is really expensive and old. The only place that we found that was what we were looking for just so happened to be in the ghetto. I shall hopefully have more luck tomorrow. I’m sure there will be more to this story later.
- Finally, the Daytona 500 was a disappointment. Any sporting event cut short by rain is going to be a disappointment for sure, but you’ll never see the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup cut short due to weather (notice how I didn’t mention the World Series). The giant crash caused by Dale Jr. was exciting, though the wreck eliminated my three fantasy drivers from the race 🙁
