What I Watch/Watched This “Summer”

One thing that I really wanted to do during my “Summer” was catch up on TV shows that, for whatever reason, I never got into. I was able to watch all of Arrested Development and How I Met Your Mother and loved both of them but I also downloaded House and Mad Men to watch and, between my busy schedule of Karaoke outings and financial accounting reviews, I haven’t had a chance to get to either of those shows. Luckily for me, though, this Summer we have been graced with some great first run programming. Now that my “Summer” is less than three weeks from ending, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at what I’ve watched.

I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here

Im a Celebrity, Get Me Outta Here

Why, oh why, did I ever start watching this show?  I detest reality shows (save for The Real World and The Ultimate Fighter, which I actually don’t watch anymore), but for some reason, when I saw this advertised, I decided I had to watch it.  For those of you who don’t remember, this was the show that put “12” “celebrities” on a “deserted island” for “three weeks” and had them “compete” for $25,000 to go to a charity of their choice.  Just about every aspect of the premise of the show was BS.  First of all, they stretched the definition of “celebrity” to its limits, including Heidi Montag’s SISTER and two fat black ladies who make jokes on VH1’s Best Week Ever.  Then, after some of the participants quit, they just started randomly bringing in new “celebrities” to take their place, rendering the competition pretty useless.  Then, the deserted island was revealed to be a Costa Rican beach.  It was so ridiculous, especially when they showed John Salley asking one of the producers for a cigar. Also, the three weeks that celebrities were supposed to be there was changed to 24 days in the middle of the show.  What I don’t understand though, is why didn’t ABC just donate $25,000 to every persons charity instead of spending the millions that they did on this stupid show.  At least we all got to learn how nice of a guy Lou Diamond Philips is though!

True Blood

I watched about half of the first season of True Blood last year before I gave up on it because I couldn’t stand how big of a slut Sookie Stackhouse had become (and she wasn’t even just a slut…she was a vampire slut).  I also found the massive gratuitous nudity even too much for me to handle.  A few weeks ago, though, I was laying in bed and a stumbled upon a repeat of an episode from this season and I started watching it again.  Dare I say, this show has hit its stride.  There still is way too much nudity and cussing (and I thought the Soprano’s characters had a potty mouth!) but each episode ends with me wanting to see more.  The only thing that doesn’t have me massively gushing about this show, though, is that I feel like the writers are making things up as they go on, as there is absolutely no use of foreshadowing in the writing.  Besides LOST, this is probably the second best Sci-Fi show I’ve ever watched.

Entourage

Man, has this show fallen in quality or what?  I’m not even sure what season we are on, since like two years ago they decided to have two seasons in the same year, each one being six episodes or so.  For the sake of discussion, let’s say there have been six seasons.  The first three seasons were fun to watch and very entertaining.  The next two seasons were entertaining but were becoming repetitive and not that fun.  Really, listening to Ari scream at Lloyd and Drama act stupid were the only redeeming qualities of the show.  But this season?  I don’t even know what I am watching.  Drama hasn’t even had a storyline all season and Ari’s outbursts are becoming forced and overdone.  It’s as if Ari’s character knows that all he is good for is yelling for no reason and is so uninterested in the work that he is doing that he is just going through the motions.  And what about Turtle?  Last night he was accepted to UCLA’s MBA program, which is about as believable as the fact that his character could date Jamie Lynn Seigler, which he is doing this season.  I have a feeling that this show may be having it’s season pass deleted on my DVR real soon.

The Real World: Cancun

The Real World is one of my many guilty pleasures.  I’ve been watching since my old roommate Jeff and I sat down one Saturday and watched a marathon of the San Diego season and decided that we wanted to be just like Brad and Randy.  Usually the characters are, for the most part, likeable, with one or two exceptions, which is what provides the viewer with entertainment.  This season, though, everyone is unlikeable.  Don’t get me wrong, it is still entertaining, but I just cannot stand 7 out of the 8 characters on the screen.  The only person who is likeable is named Bronne, but even he has some unlikeable qualities.  Take last week’s episode, for instance.  The roommates are fighting (no surprise) and Joey starts antagonizing Ayiiia.  It is revealed that she is a cutter, so Joey starts putting signs all over the house making fun of her for her problem.  Even when she is sitting outside crying her guts out, he keeps coming outside and asking her if she has a knife.  It was very low class, even for The Real World.  So then we cut to an interview with Bronne, who is like, “Joey is taking this way too far.  I mean, I don’t like Ayiiia but I would never do anything like that…but whatever, I’m not going to stop him”.  I was hoping he would come in and save the day and punch Joey, but instead, we see him laughing with Joey about the whole thing.  Very upsetting.  Still, though, I will keep watching each week to see where it goes from here.

Other Shows I’ve Been Watching: Pardon the Interruption, NASCAR Now, Three Sheets, Man vs. Food
