Last night I went with my friend Cody to McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon. This bar holds a special place in my heart, which I will explain momentarily, and, despite being disliked by almost everyone over the age of 22, I find it to be one of the more interesting bars that I have ever been to. Being that it was the first time I had visited the DC version of McFadden’s, I had high hopes for last night. Thankfully, it didn’t disappoint.
The first time I ever visited a McFadden’s was in Chicago earlier this year when I visited my friend Vasu (you can read about the trip here). Vasu is friends with a lot of bartenders and Sunday night at McFadden’s is industry night. Not only that, but on Sunday’s everything on the menu is $2. Needless to say, it got to be a bit ugly by the end of the night (saved only by the fact that we experienced the greatest hamburger of our lives on the way home). Being that it was a Sunday, the bar wasn’t too crowded, but that all changed when we went back two nights later for $3 Tuesdays. As the name would imply, everything on the menu was $3. Now by itself that would be enough to make the night memorable (or maybe unmemorable, if you get my drift) but there was something else that made that night special:

It turned out that McFadden’s Chicago would send a bus to Northwestern University and pickup girls for the sole purpose of coming to the bar to dance on bars and tables (kind of like they did in Alabama in the 1960’s for another thing). It was out of control.
Now McFadden’s DC was out of control in its own right. As one girl noted to me, what we experienced last night was actually a tame night as school is out for Summer (McFadden’s is located on the campus of George Washington University, where I will be attending in two months…the bar’s location playing a part it my acceptance decision), but it was crazy in its own right.
First of all, all drinks were $3. Second of all, Bacardi was doing a promotion there, so we got free Bacardi and Cokes (or Bacardi and Orange Juices, as I confusingly ordered thinking that Bacardi was vodka. Thankfully, Cody quickly set me straight and we cancelled the order). Third of all, the bartenders were freaking crazy (the two guys working the bar we were standing at were more interested in dancing with patrons then actually serving drinks…at one point they tried to see which one could balance a bottle of liquor on their head the longest, resulting in the shattering of a Tequilla bottle). There was even a bartender, who looked exactly like Sanjaya, who appeared to have no purpose other then run around and dance with everybody and play with a ballon, which, I should mentioned, had a drawing of his face on it.

I truly do not see why this place gets such a bad rap. McFadden’s has everything that you could possibly want in a bar and I plan to go back frequently.
